Missouri
River
The
Missouri below Holter Dam is one of the best tailwater fisheries that
can be found anywhere in the angling world. Constant hatches of
tricos and baetis in later summer and early fall provide the challenge
of hooking large trout on sizes 18 to 24 dry flies. Nymphs such as
beadhead lightning bugs and pheasant tails in the same sizes are also
very effective. On sunny afternoons grasshoppers patterns are
excellent and large streamers are always a good bet. While
floating is the best way to fish the Missouri there are plenty of
opportunities to wade fish the slicks, flats and pools that are found
along the river.
Smith
River
The
Smith River provides one of the most unforgettable 5 day float trips
that an angler can imagine. The scenery is breathtaking and varies
from meadows to remote canyons which provide views of arches, caves and
other geologic wonders. Along its 60 miles of varying water fly
fishers can expect to catch browns and rainbows along with a scattering
of cutthroat and brook trout. Dry flies and nymphs that imitate
stoneflies, caddis and mayflies are very effective as well as black
wooly buggers and while marabou muddlers. This trip is certainly a
must-do for all anglers who visit Montana!
